Department has completed the 1st part of Nehru Helipad extension work and the process of 2nd phase will be taken up shortly. The state Govt. hangar at Srinagar has been renovated with complete concrete apron and remodeling of technical offices and VIP lounges.

In Jammu, the work on the Aviation complex at Satwari airport has begun and all hick up of land acquisition are over.

The technical estimates for the creation of airstrip at Kishtwar, Rajouri and Surankot are awaited. Department has also been planning to create commercial heliports at various tourist destinations but to avoid duplication of work with tourism department, it has kept itself in the advisory role.

The extension of Runway at Kargil has been approved and Ministry of Defense, Govt. of India will be undertaking the extension work. The runway extension of Jammu airport has also been cleared and AAI will soon be commencing work. Department has also handed overclose to 45 kanals of land to Airport Authority of India at Satwari Airport Jammu to extend the apron area for more parking bays. Department has been pursuing very strongly with Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India and DGCA to start commercial air service between Srinagar/Jammu and Kargil. At present AN-32 aircrafts of Indian Air Force are carrying out routine weekly/biweekly couriers between Kargil and Srinagar/Jammu.

A detailed proposal of wet leasing of large Helicopter for the state is pending for approval for grant of subsidy on the pattern of North-East states with Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. If approved, these Helicopters will be able to provide regular air Service to far flung areas which are surrounded by rugged and inhospitable terrain and get cut off in winters particularly of Ladakh Region.
